Here are a few things you may not know about Mary Nickles: Nickles comes from a big family having grown up in Renton, Washington with her eight brothers and sisters.
Her father is a retired telephone worker and her late mother was a state legislator and advocate for children.
Nickles majored in English at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, where she used her athletic ability and height to attend on a volleyball scholarship.
Aside from the people who have come to know and love Nickles as their morning news anchor, she gained a new following after a routine story where she got a mammogram for a story.
The purpose of the story was to encourage more women to get screened for breast cancer. After that segment was over and aired, Nickles was told by the doctor she needed to come in for a follow up appointment -- but it wasn't for the story.
She found out doctors had discovered an invasive, malignant tumor. While she didn't want to become the story, she realized this was a story that now needed to be told. For the next six months, she took viewers on her cancer battle journey with her.
Some of the stories showed her getting chemo treatments, wig shopping, having radiation and then documenting when the cancer was in remission. You can read her whole story on her cancer story blog here.
In addition to all the other things Nickles does at the station for community advocacy, she finds time to coach volleyball and is also very active in the community as a mentor for youth and as an advocate for health.
